In 1987 James King received the Bachelor of Fine Art degree from Oxford University.
During his studies he spent 3 months in Italy with a travelling scholarship grant from Sotherby's of London.
After graduation he spent a year in Budapest before moving to Paris.

From 1991 to 1994, James King worked as studio assistant for the Swiss artist Daniel Spoerri, inventor of "Eat Art" and the "Tableau Piège", and member of the Nouveaux Realistes movement.
In 2002 and 2003, he assisted the British sculptor Raymond Mason in his Paris studio.

James King currently teaches two days a week at the Paris American Academy School of Fine Art, Fashion and Interior Design in the 5th arrondissement in Paris.
