Every Monday night at 7 with rare exception, Shakespeare and Company hosts an author for a reading that is free and open to all. We were especially excited and honored to have John Calder as our guest on April 5, 2010. The night was one to remember, as guests young and old listened to John read and discuss his poetry, and recount his life as legendary publisher of such esteemed figures as Samuel Beckett and William S. Burroughs, as well as of English translations of such greats as Chekhov, Dostoevsky, and Zola, among many others. The bookshop was full, with people spilling out the front doors into the early evening sun. I love taking photos of the readings because each author creates a different atmosphere. The venue is at once the same and different from week to week, making each photo session a unique experience.

I luckily managed to get a job at Shakespeare and Company, where in addition to my other bookshop duties I photograph the readings every Monday. I was very excited when Jim contacted me to show the photos from John Calder's reading. Photography has long been a passion of mine; I've been taking photos since I learned how to shoot and print black and white film in high school, but this is my first show. |
